Physician (Regular Ft) - Specialty Care Chief

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Responsibilities The Specialty Care Chief is responsible to ensure specialty care provided to Clarksburg VAMC Veterans is adequate and appropriate.
Duties and responsibilities include a variety of medical and surgical care management techniques, which requires knowledge, skills, licensure, and experience as a physician.
Position involves understanding of the requirements for:
safety, evaluations, knowledge and skill in the procedures, administration and documentation of inpatient and outpatient specialty care; and skill in maintaining effective work relationships with patients, members of the treatment team and other services in the organization.
The Specialty Care Chief must possess the knowledge to provide oversight and leadership to Outpatient Care which includes Dermatology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Sleep Medicine and other services inside of Specialty Care.
The incumbent is responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations of the Specialists and reports directly to the ACOS for Medicine & Specialty Care Services.
The incumbent is responsible for maintaining professional, technical, and administrative knowledge, competencies, and skill to deliver effective, timely and high-quality medical care to patients at Clarksburg VAMC as well as deliver patient care.
The Specialty Care Chief will supervise the other physicians and mid-level providers in the specialty care section of the service, as well as work as a provider in the outpatient clinic.
The incumbent is expected to actively participate in quality improvement activities and ensure compliance with rules and regulations of the agency, facility, and department.
The Specialty Care Chief is responsible for the overall leadership of the program and ensures the quality of medical services provided, the education and training of professional staff, and the safety and ethical conduct of medical research conducted on patients aligned to the service.
The Specialty Care Chief is involved in providing the framework for planning, directing, coordinating, providing and improving the health care services that are responsive to community patient needs and that improve patient health outcomes within the respective service line.
The incumbent provides overall guidance and supervision to staff in his/her service line.
The Associate Chief of Staff, Medicine & Specialty Service is the supervisor of this position, with the Chief of Staff providing secondary supervision.
Overall supervision is provided by the ACOS/Medicine and Specialty Service.
The Specialty Care Chief works with considerable independence, assuming complete responsibility for a full range of treatment programs, which is periodically reviewed by the supervisor.
On the basis of education and experience, most often works without supervision and assumes the obligation of proper treatment and coordination of care.
The Professional Standards Board under delineation of clinical privileges provides medical authority.
Administrative direction is provided in terms of broadly defined goals and missions.
Incumbent exercises an exceptional degree of latitude in the planning, designing, implementation, and accomplishment of program responsibilities.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Education:
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Licensure:
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
) Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.
e.
, not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.
